Monash Blues would like to congratulate Sam Baring who will play his his 150th hard fought game for the club against Beaumaris this week.

Sam’s commitment to the club began as the wiry team mascot, Mowgli, who helped the boys to the 1996 and 2003 D grade flags.

As a player his trademark dipping helicopter kick first hit the Frearson in 2008, where he captained the under 19s to the grand final and played a handful of games in the seniors. It doesn’t take much convincing for Sam to regale you of his debut seniors game where (in his words) the coach singled him out during the half time speech as ‘the hardest nut on the field’.

Since 2009 he has consistently stood on the last line of defence in the ones, at times being the only shining light in some heavy losses. Sam’s ability to use his gangly frame to pile up scalp upon scalp of the competition’s best forwards has been recognised internally (consistent top five finishes in the club B&F) and by the VAFA (Big V selection).

Sam’s contribution to Monash extends well beyond the football field. His leadership and commitment have helped grow the club culture. There is no doubt that without Sam that the Monash Blues would not be experiencing the growth it currently is. His tireless efforts have created a football club environment full of great blokes, great atmosphere and a hunger to win.

After what injury wise was a disappointing season for Sam last year, let’s hope he gets back to form in a big way and experiences more of the success he deserves over his next 150 games.
